Does Avandia harm more than it helps?

Diabetes is a serious condition and requires proper treatment. Thankfully, there are a number of drugs on the market that can increase the quality of life of those who must contend with the condition. While most diabetes drugs perform their intended purpose there will be mishaps where a drug does not deliver the results that are intended. In some cases, the drug might very well make the quality of the person's life even worse! Such was the case with the diabetes drug Avandia, a drug that promised a lot and ended up delivering an adverse health risk.

The problems with Avandia are serious. This drug comes with a severe heart attack risk. In fact, there have been significant recorded instances of people taking Avandia suffering from cardiac arrest. Needless to say, this has led to a panic among those who have taken the drug. Of course, it has also led to a number of lawsuits against the manufacturer who released such a sincerely dangerous drug to the marketplace. What compounds this situation worse is that the manufacturer (GlaxoSmithKline) understood the inherent heart risks associated with the drug, but did not aggressively notify doctors and/or patients of these risks.

The reasons for such a lack of aggressive effort on the part of GlaxoSmithKline will probably never be known. Surely, the company realized that the dangers of the medicine would eventually be revealed. Yet, the company dragged its feet and this has resulted in a number of heart ailments that could have been averted. So, it goes without saying, such a lack of responsibility has opened the floodgates for a number of liability lawsuitsand deservedly so.

Hopefully, these lawsuits will prevent such flawed products from ever reaching the market again. Granted, there is no guarantee that such a problem will never happen but frequent legal actions will surely reduce the number of such instances.
