TIBURON, Calif. (AP) - Tiburon officials say about 64,000 gallons of partially treated sewage spilled into San Francisco Bay after pumps at a sewage plant stopped working.

Officials say the wastewater overflowed from tanks at the Tiburon Sanitary District and leaked into Racoon Strait early Tuesday.

District manager Robert Lynch says the spill occurred after a part in the backup pump system short-circuited. He says the spilled liquid poses a low environmental risk because it had already been chlorinated and de-chlorinated.

Marin County officials are collecting water samples and expect to have test results later this week.

In the meantime, people are being urged to stay out of the water until the test results are in.
